A Kangra court sent Rakesh Kumar (28) and Sunil Kumar (26) — the two taxi drivers accused of abducting and raping a British teenager on Thursday
after she boarded their taxi in Palampur — to three-day police remand.
Kangra SP Atul Kumar Fulzele said the evidence collected from the body of the rape victim had been sent for forensic tests and the two accused had confessed to their crime.
The statements of Rakesh and Sunil were recorded in the district and sessions court, Kangra, on Saturday afternoon, after which they were remanded in police custody.

Six more swine flu cases take tally to 56
NEW DELHI: The swine flu toll is steadily rising with six new cases reported on Saturday, taking the number of confirmed case of H1N1 infections
to 56. And, with one more human-to-human transmission case reported, six such cases are now registered in India, five from Delhi alone.
Of the six cases, three are in Delhi, one each in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Fatehgarh in Punjab. In Delhi, a 27-year-old man and a four-year-old boy tested positive. The two arrived from Canada via Brussels. The third confirmed case — fifth human-to-human transmission in Delhi — is of a 30-year-old man, who was discharged from Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital after his reports tested negative but with slight indication of H1N1 flu. His sample was sent to the NICD for a second test.
"This man has now tested positive. As the first report was negative, but indicated a slight flu, he was discharged. But his sample was taken. We have got him readmitted into the hospital. We have issued instruction to all the medical superintendents (of hospitals) where isolation facility has been created that no patient should be discharged till the time his reports are completely negative," said J P Singh, principal secretary (Health), Delhi.
The two cases reported from Bangalore and Hyderabad came from Philadelphia and New York, respectively. The other case in Fatehgarh Sahib, is of a 15-year-old boy, who was part of the 31-student group that visited Nasa.

Apples, avocados and a glass of red wine 'can ease arthritis
LONDON: Suffering from arthritis? Make sure you eat apples, avocados, oily fish and drink a goblet of red wine everyday, for a new study has
revealed that these could ease the painful joint condition.
Researchers have carried out the study and found a definite link between the food people eat and the severity of the symptoms -- in fact, apples, avocados and red wine contain anti-oxidants which reduce the rate at which cartilage breaks down, helping to slow the process of osteoarthritis.
Likewise, oily fish like salmon are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids that oil the joints and thereby damp down inflammation. Omega-3 could also reduce the long-term need for painkillers in those with joint problems.
The study has also suggested that drinking plenty of fluids, two to three litres a day, to maintain good hydration and a steady flow of nutrients to your joints, leading British newspaper the 'Daily Mail' reported.
And, the foods most commonly found to worsen arthritis are wheat, corn, rye, sugar, caffeine, yeast, dairy products, oranges, grapefruit, lemons and tomatoes. Meats most likely to provoke symptoms are bacon, pork, beef and lamb.
According to researchers, these foods trigger joint pain in those with arthritis. But when these are avoided about 70 per cent of sufferers have been seen to be reporting less pain and improved mobility.
The researchers have based their findings on an analysis of 82 people with osteoarthritis. The study also found that pain intensity reduced during the six-week period they had weekly Reiki sessions.

Scientists discover solar-like oscillations in massive star
NEW DELHI: Scientists claim to have discovered a massive star 10 times the mass of Sun but with similar oscillations which could open new
possibilities of probing the interiors of celestial bodies and understanding the reasons behind the fluctuations inside the Sun.
Researchers at LESIA, a laboratory of the Paris observatory (France), and AGO, a laboratory of the Lihge University (Belgium) studied the massive star -- V1449 Aql (HD180642) -- for more than 150 days and observed that it displays solar-like pulsations which have, so far, never been detected in any heavenly body.
The study, conducted by CoRoT space mission, launched on December 27, 2006, has been developed and operated by CNES, a French government space agency, with contribution from Austria, Belgium, Brazil, ESA (RSSD and Science Programme), Germany and Spain.
"The unprecedented high-precision photometric data gathered for this star by the CoRoT mission allows us to report the first detection of solar-like oscillations in a massive star, V1449 Aql," said Belkacem Kevin, department of Astrophysics, AGO, in an email interview.
The Sun oscillates (fluctuations in its diameter) at a period of around five minutes and these motions represent the superposition of literally millions of independent modes, resonating below its surface at extremely precise periods.

Coming soon, cars which would allow drivers 'to eat and sleep'
Coming soon, cars which would allow drivers 'to eat and sleep'
LONDON: Imagine cars that would allow you to eat, read, watch television and even sleep behind the wheel while travelling at a speed of 70 mph onthe highway
Your imagination could someday turn into a reality, thanks to scientists who claim to have developed lasers-guided vehicles, using a system which will lock cars using sensors as well as wireless technology, allowing up to ten at a time to cruise in "car train" convoys.
And, according to the scientists at Volvo, the sensors will synchronise each car to follow in the wake of the vehicle which is directly ahead, with a laser calculating the speed relative to other cars at a rate of 50 times a second.
Interestingly, the only steering and braking would be done by a professional driver at the front of the convoy.
"It would be the same as sitting on a bus or a train, with the big difference that when you come to your exit you take over and you go directly to your destination without having to switch vehicles.
"The professional driver leading the convoy will be responsible for the safety of those behind him. But, those joining the convoy will be taking only the same sort of risks that those jumping on a bus or tube are taking," Jonas Ekmark, a safety researcher at Volvo cars, told the 'Daily Mail'. .
